If you need a motivation for your kid to follow rules, show good manners or be well behaved, this calendar could be your solution. At least it is for us! My daughter always needs to know what day of the week it is, how many days are until weekend, if she has an after school activity that day, who has birthday, what happenings are about to come and so on. I think it makes her feel like having things under her control. She is really goal-orientated and wants to see how well she has done and of course get some award or recognition of what she has done. This is what the calendar looks like. The text is in Icelandic but I will explain.
We made this calendar together. I was holding the ruler while my daughter made the lines. I wrote in the text and she did the decoration. Together we decided what topics we need to be working on, what she has been doing well and what she needs to do better. According to that, we agreed on 5 topics or goals that we would be focusing on. On the left side of the calendar we wrote her goals for this month. In our case it was:
- always wake up in a good mood
- get dressed by my self
- keep my room tidy
- be nice to everyone
- do my homework
When she had got 20 stickers she got to choose what swimming pool to go to on a saturday afternoon. When she had 40 stickers she got a small toy she had been asking about for ages and when she got 60 stickers she got a special award. Then we went to KidZania which is my daughter´s favorite place on earth!
